ALS Research Study

We are recruiting individuals with Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis to participate in a research study, taking place virtually or in person at the Wellness, Health and Research Facility (WHARF) in Homewood, AL.

Currently, there is confusion amongst healthcare providers, caregivers and individuals with ALS about the appropriate level of exercise and physical activity following diagnosis of ALS, despite evidence suggesting that exercise is safe and can enhance quality of life for individuals with ALS.

This study includes asking individuals with ALS questions about their exercise habits, levels of physical activity, exercise self-efficacy, and the social support they receive, to understand how all of these things influence participation in exercise. Participation involves filling out some surveys and a one-time, confidential, interview. The entire process can be completed in person, virtually, or over the phone, and will take approximately an hour and thirty minutes. Participation is completely voluntary, and choosing whether or not to participate will not affect your care at UAB or any other facility in any way. Participants who complete both the survey and interview will receive a $50 gift card.

Breast Cancer Research Study

We are recruiting individuals with Stage I-IV Breast Cancer to participate in an sleep research study, taking place in the comfort of your own home.

VAGUS NERVE STIMULATION FOR INSOMNIA: Participants will be given a Vagus Nerve Stimulator, which is a portable device to be worn 15 minutes before bed, that could help decrease stress and improve sleep. Vagus Nerve Stimulation is a novel treatment that is FDA approved for the treatment of epilepsy and migraines. There is evidence to suggest that this treatment may be beneficial for individuals with insomnia as well. Your participation in this study will help us learn more about this intervention and how it influences sleep in individuals with Breast Cancer.

FitBit: individuals participating in this study will be provided with a FitBit to wear for 4 weeks that will track activity levels and sleep.
